2. Critical issues for solar integration
Cleaning may require large quantities of heat, when large quantities of material have to be processed. When the produced solar heat is not enough, a boiler in parallel with the solar collector can provide the necessary heat for the process (Joanneum Research). In small production units, when there are long intervals between two operations, the heat storage tank cannot sufficiently store the thermal energy until it’s used. In these cases the surplus of produced heat, during the days of no production, should be used for other processes also if that is possible (Joanneum Research). In the case of closed solar systems, the process medium is recycled and therefore should be of acceptable quality both for the maintenance of the solar system and for the efficiency of the process. If necessary, the medium should be refreshed regularly (Joanneum Research).
