1. DESCRIPTION OF TECHNIQUES, METHODS AND EQUIPMENT

Flax contains 25-30 % more non-cellulose matter than cotton. Therefore complicated processes are needed to achieve full-white.

possible processes
1.) pre-bleaching at pH 11.5 in bath
2.) addition of sodium chlorite at pH 5.5 and 65°C to bath
widely used
4-step process:
1.) alkaline cooking
2.) alkaline bleaching with hypochlorite
3.) chlorite bleaching
4.) peroxide bleaching
LOK-process (Degussa)
1.) sodium chlorite bleaching
2.) H2O2 bleaching
Ravensburger process
1.) broth
2.) bleaching with aqueous chlorine dioxide-solution
3.) H2O2 bleaching
4.) hypochlorite bleaching
