1. Description of techniques, methods and equipment


In refrigeration and cooling systems a refrigerant like ammonia or a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)- based substance is primary compressed and its expansion makes a closed circuit cooling system running. The refrigerant can act on the one hand as primary coolant by circulating directly through the cooling system or on the other hand it can chill a secondary coolant such as brine or glycol. Cooling systems generally are closed loops without any leaks. CFC- based refrigerants were very common but today their use is forbidden in many states because their release to the atmosphere causes depletion of ozone layer.


2. New technologies


a) Changes in the process


  • CFC- based refrigerants should be replaced by other substances, preferably by ammonia. The replacement is often expensive because the installation of new cooling equipment is required.
  • Energy savings can be made by minimizing the ingress of heat into refrigerated areas. This is accomplished by insulating cold rooms and refrigerant containing pipes, by closing doors and windows to cold areas and by installing self- closing doors.
  • Algal growth in evaporator pipes can cause high water and electricity consumption. Also too fast running fans can be a reason for it because they blow the water off the cooling tower.
