Preliminary products

For the production of sheets, which are finished products of rolling mills, so-called steel slabs are needed, which can be produced via the “ingot casting process” or the “continuous casting process”. Steel slabs are among the first solid shapes of steel after liquid production.

Types of sheets

Steel sheets can be distinguished according to several features. A classification due to gauge can be found here:

Thin sheet:

Thin sheets have a gauge smaller than 3 mm. Thin sheets are hot- or cold-rolled sheets, which are usually used for forming. According to the steel type, these thin sheets can be tin-plated, zinc-plated, copper-plated, nickel-plated, lacquered, enamelled or plastic coated. Thin sheets are cut from steel strips or delivered as coil.

There are three main customer groups:

  • automotive engineering ~42%
  • iron-, sheet- and metal-industry ~20%
  • electrical engineering ~15%

Heavy plate: Sheets with a gauge > 3, 00 mm.  DIN EN 10029

Sheet production

Sheets can be produced via several milling processes.

Hot rolling

  • Oscillating process: This type of rolling is predominantly used for heavy plates with gauge >= 5mm and withd >= 2000 mm. Thin sheets are rolled in this process for special purposes, e.g. production of a certain texture.
  • Continuous process (hot wide strip): Thinner slabs (gauge: 100-200 mm) are rolled to the required gauge (usually 2-15 mm) on a series of roll stands (5-7). The product has a length of more than 300 m and is then being cut into the required pieces.

Cold rolling

Cold rolling is done after hot rolling. To get cold-rolled products with gauges <= 2,99 m, hot-rolled material is needed as preliminary product.

Fields of application
  • steel construction, e.g. bridge building
  • mechanical engineering
  • shipbuilding
  • car bodies
  • pipeline construction (gas pipes)
  • car cranes

Processing

Processing can be done through cutting, drilling, sawing, laser cutting, nibbeling (stamping), deep drawing, bending, hallmarking or cold forming of sections.

Besides processing, assembling of sheets is of big importance. The following
